September 14, 2009UNHCR’s Policy Development and Evaluation Service and the Women’s Rights and Gender Unit in OHCHR have developed a session to draw this serious human rights issue to the attention of the Human Rights Council:
A Modern day “Crucible” – Witchcraft accusations against women and children in the 21st Century – a lunchtime event held in Palais des Nations on 23 Sept 2009 from 13.00-15.00 in Salle XXII
Witchcraft accusations often target marginalised groups, including refugees and IDPs. Women, children and older persons are also disproportionately affected – although accusations against adult males are not unknown.
Those accused of witchcraft are often subjected to ostracization and violence, including sexual violence. Once stigmatized as a witch, victims are often rejected by their relatives and community. This in turn makes them even more vulnerable to other human rights abuses such as forced prostitution and trafficking.
