Modern day crucible – Witchcraft accusations against women and children in the 21st Century – in Palais des Nations 23rd of Sep from 13.00-15.00 in room 22

September 14, 2009

UNHCR’s Policy Development and Evaluation Service and the Women’s Rights and Gender Unit in OHCHR have developed a session to draw this serious human rights issue to the attention of the Human Rights Council:

A Modern day “Crucible” – Witchcraft accusations against women and children in the 21st Century – a lunchtime event held in Palais des Nations on 23 Sept 2009 from 13.00-15.00 in Salle XXII

Witchcraft accusations often target marginalised groups, including refugees and IDPs. Women, children and older persons are also disproportionately affected – although accusations against adult males are not unknown.

Those accused of witchcraft are often subjected to ostracization and violence, including sexual violence. Once stigmatized as a witch, victims are often rejected by their relatives and community. This in turn makes them even more vulnerable to other human rights abuses such as forced prostitution and trafficking.

Kindly contact Maria Riiskjaer riiskjae@unhcr.org if you have any questions regarding the event
